Within the school system, there are 4,450 students throughout 9 schools (1 high school - labeled as a "North Carolina School of Distinction"; and 8 schools serving grades K-8 - each recognized as a "North Carolina Honor School of Excellence").Watauga High School students consistently perform above the national average on the SAT, and are given additional opportunities to excel through programs offered nearby at Appalachian State University.
